Agenda

Wayfair Nexus Update 9:00–9:50 a.m.
The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in the Wayfair case now allows taxing jurisdictions to impose an economic nexus test. Sellers of goods and services need to know whether they are subject to new sales tax collection and remittance obligations as well as economic nexus, which has reached other types of taxes. We will discuss how states are responding to the Wayfair decision and provide recommendations for how sellers and customers should evaluate their tax compliance options.

Technology Solutions for Increased Sales Tax Compliance Burden 9:50–10:40 a.m.
Mitigate risk by assessing technology requirements for tax collection and compliance in multiple states—each with its own tax rates and rules. Avoid spending hundreds of hours manually calculating, reviewing exemption certificates, and filling out returns. Learn about reliable systems for tracking evolving regulations and automating sales tax compliance, so you can most effectively handle an increased compliance load.

Customer Exemption Certificate Management Automation and Process Improvement 10:55–11:45 a.m.
Wayfair significantly increased sales tax exemption certificate compliance volume for distributors, manufacturers, retailers, and wholesalers. Companies are now responsible for collecting exemption certificates in new states where goods are shipped. Learn more about the benefits of using Ryan’s ControlPoint market-leading exemption certificate management solution to streamline exemption certificate collection, validation, and reporting. Additionally, Stephanie Frizzell, Tractor Supply Company’s Indirect Tax Manager, will co-present with Ryan to discuss her company’s challenges with multistate sales and use tax exemption certificate management. You will learn about Tractor Supply Company’s collection, validation, and reporting burden and how ControlPoint has subsequently reduced the company’s exposure and significantly increased efficiency.

Tax Robots Are Here and Ready to Help! 12:30–1:15 p.m.
Are you already using robotic process automation (RPA)? Or have you heard about RPA and want to know what it is and what it can do for you in the tax function? Come hear and see some live examples of “bots” in action. We will share how Ryan is using RPA to create robots internally and for our clients.

Outsourcing Sales Tax and Business Compliance 1:15–2:10 p.m.
In-house tax compliance may have been manageable in a pre-Wayfair world, but once many more states are added to the compliance calendar, your staff resources may be strained to the point of missing deadlines and business license renewal dates and not responding to notices, where penalties and interest may be incurred. Learn how to free up your tax return compliance staff and gain access to sales and use tax experts to redeploy these resources for other initiatives, like managing audits that are likely to follow.

Doing Business in Europe – Value-Added Tax Compliance 2:25–3:15 p.m.
If your company is doing business in Europe, chances are you’ve had challenges dealing with value-added tax (VAT). Whether it’s navigating the varying degrees of complexity or the fact that each jurisdiction has its own set of requirements, remaining compliant and avoiding penalties can be viewed as a mission impossible.

How to Best Use Consultants 3:15–4:00 p.m.
Tax departments are continually doing more with less, and the burden can become unmanageable without help. Andy Hammons has been a corporate VP of Tax, so he knows how and when to bring in consultants to help with projects. Hear Andy’s thoughts on why it can be beneficial for a tax department and his examples for success.
